TWO LITTLE BIRDS BOUTIQUE

We’re active moms with four kids between us, both girls and boys, but we also love hearing about the specific items our local clients are shopping for and providing for them first. We have a stylish, conscious, creative, and incredibly remarkable community who really helps to curate our beautiful little haven.

GOLDFOLK is a Nevada County Community Magazine connecting local small business owners through narrative marketing. We don't run ads. We tell stories.

Organic & Eco Friendly Essentials: Baby and Children’s Clothing, Accessories, and Gifts

GOLDFOLK: Two Little Birds Boutique sources organic, eco-friendly clothing. Why are these fabrics important, and how do they differ from traditional brands?

TWO LITTLE BIRDS: Our own families are sensitive to chemicals, dyes, itchy materials, and clothing that can cause sensory issues. We specialize in high-quality bamboo and tencel, organic and pima cottons, and pieces that feel great and will last from kiddo to kiddo. Our clothes live on through the community, passed between families, friends, and second-hand stores, and are sourced from the best Tier 1 factories throughout the world, each of which specializes in the highest standards of eco-friendly clothing.

GF: Your store is filled with gifts, toys, books, and art supplies that seem to be on a constant rotation. Is there a method to your curation?

TLB: We use our own little ones for the majority of our inspiration. We’re active moms with four kids between us, both girls and boys, but we also love hearing about the specific items our local clients are shopping for and providing for them first. We have a stylish, conscious, creative, and incredibly remarkable community who really helps to curate our beautiful little haven.

GF: Many of your items, if not all, are available online. What can parents, grandparents, and gift-givers expect to find in-store that’s not available online, and vice versa?

TLB: Just about everything we offer is available online, but we do have in-store events and in-store deals on one-of-a-kind items, or locally-made products, that we don’t add to our website. Our passion is connecting with our customers, including their kids and extended families, which is why we love our events. However, we also understand, as busy parents, that providing multiple points of purchase is essential in today’s world, so we work hard to keep our online store reflective of that in-store shopping experience.

GF: TLB has a unique origin story in that you met one another in prenatal yoga. How has this genesis informed your partnership and relationship to your business?

TLB: Our partnership was formed out of a need to provide for our own two little birds at home. We had an instant connection with one another and found that we balanced each other out in so many ways. Kelly’s initial Grass Valley store was ready to enter its next phase of growth and with wide eyes and a bright smile Moriah said, “I want to do that with you!” By the end of the week we had signed our lease at 234 Commercial street, where we still are today, and where together we have created the most beautiful community for our little birds. We love what we do and we’re able to combine all of our various experiences in marketing, sales, event and retail management, and wholesale brand-representation to form this lasting partnership that remains today.

We really thank The Nest, a local amazing non-profit, for connecting us through all the various play and mama groups. We have made life long family-friends in this town and feel very blessed to have this opportunity to serve our community and create such a beautiful space of connection, love, and joy!

GF: Your social media seems to highlight Nevada County as a huge influence on your curation. How and why do you feel inspired by your surroundings, and in what way does that influence the clothing and products you sell?

TLB: We both have a true knack for marketing, networking, and style that helps to bring in customers and create a real niche for organic, high-quality clothes that are stylish but will also withstand the active ruff and tumble Nevada County culture. We learned quickly that white doesn’t sell in this town and reinforcement in the knees and crotch were as important as an epic twirl on a stylish and comfy dress.

Our community is very conscious and cares about quality products that don’t contribute to the chemically-produced fast-fashion of today’s children’s clothes. We also stock relevant and fun toys and accessories that our kids are asking for

and that you can’t find at the local Target, cementing us as a birthday gift hub for items not available at traditional big-box stores. And, of course, we include gift wrapping with every purchase.

GF: How does TLB celebrate halloween? What can parents expect or prepare for?

TLB:  We are a huge hub for Halloween celebrations. Not only do we get all decked out with our kiddos and community, but we pass out treats and have in-store specials all day. We start the parade up the hill to all the amazing homes in Nevada City around 5pm––it’s an event not to be missed! Our town is the best Halloween town for kiddos.
